What is RYLA?

Rotary Youth Leadership Awards (RYLA) is District 7980’s leadership training program for young men and women ages 16 & 17 in grades 10 and 11.  These talented young people are selected by their local Rotary clubs, from area high schools, to attend an all expenses paid weekend conference designed to increase their leadership skills and commitment to community service.

RYLA emphasizes the development of leadership skills, citizenship and service to one’s community and continued personal growth of the individual.

The cost of the program this year is $235.00 per student, which includes all hotel accommodations, meals and conference materials.   The sponsoring Rotary Club pays the cost of the program and may sponsor two students to attend each conference.  Space is limited to 35 students and participation is open to high school students from every community within District 7980.

The conference will take place at the Homewood Suites, 6905 Main Street, Stratford, CT 06615.   Registration will be between 4:00pm - 4:45pm on Friday November 13, 2009.  The program will begin with dinner on Friday evening at 5:00pm and the conference will end at 1:00pm on Sunday, November 15, 2009.  Transportation to Homewood Suites for the RYLA Conference is the responsibility of the applicant.

Conference honorees from throughout Connecticut will be attending and each participant will be assigned a roommate(s).  Our program will include workshops on Leadership, Time Management, Listening and Communication, Relationships, Goal Setting, Team Building and Personal Development.   Rotarians will discuss Rotary’s purpose, service to the community and Rotary’s role in helping mankind around the globe.  Local Rotary clubs have been invited to share their community service projects, local and international projects are featured during their sessions.  The honorees will actively participate in numerous sessions of the program.  The dress is casual, but neat and ample free time will be provided for socializing, networking and lots of FUN.
